Hobsbawm died
A giant died today, the Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm (1917- 2012). I am ever indebted to the late Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud; he introduced me to the works of this master.
Was also very sad when I found out. I didn't agree with everything he wrote (and even found his autobiography quite dull, considering what a life he had led!), but his histories of the 'long' 19th and 'short' 20th centuries are timeless and beautiful. And there's no one in sight to put on his shoes...
